The Day-Hab Center recently implemented a virtual reality system that will enable us to expand the range of our activities and give our clients the ability to have new and enjoyable experiences. The system projects games and interactive content on the wall, floor, or table, and it responds to movement of participants. The size of the activity area can be altered or focused on one table or wheelchair, so that the individual can feel that he or she is an active participant in the activity. The system includes interactive activities of different degrees of difficulty and requiring different skills, and it is used to improve both cognitive and physical capabilities. It can be used to practice cause and effect, hand-eye coordination, and interpersonal communication.
The ability to adapt the technology for individuals with complex disabilities enables each participant to experience the taste of success, increasing motivation and level of activity. In addition, it provides the staff with a tool to evaluate abilities and adapt the games for each individual’s needs and goals.
